Passport Photo vs Visa Photo — What's the Difference?
Are passport photos and visa photos the same? Learn the key differences in size, requirements, and submission format for US passport and visa photos.
Short Answer
For US documents, passport photos and visa photos are almost identical. Both are 2x2 inches with the same background, expression, and head-size requirements. The main differences are in how they're submitted digitally.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Requirement | US Passport Photo | US Visa Photo |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 2 x 2 inches | 2 x 2 inches |
| Head height | 1 to 1-3/8 inches | 1 to 1-3/8 inches |
| Background | White or off-white | White or off-white |
| Expression | Neutral | Neutral |
| Glasses | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| Digital size | 600x600 to 1200x1200 px | Exactly 600x600 px |
| File format | JPEG | JPEG |
| File size | 54 KB to 10 MB | 54 KB to 240 KB |
The Key Differences
1. Digital File Size Limits
This is the biggest practical difference. Passport photos for online renewal can be up to 10 MB, while visa photos submitted through the DS-160 form are capped at 240 KB. This means visa photos may need more compression.
2. Submission Method
- Passport photos: Submitted as digital uploads (online renewal) or as physical photos (in-person application)
- Visa photos: Uploaded digitally through the DS-160 application, and sometimes physical copies are also required at the interview
3. Recency
Both require photos taken within the last 6 months, but visa applications are particularly strict about this. If you've changed your appearance significantly (weight, hair, facial hair), take a new photo.
What About Other Visa Types?
Different countries have different visa photo requirements:
- Schengen visa: 35 x 45 mm (not 2x2 inches)
- UK visa: 35 x 45 mm
- Canadian visa: 35 x 45 mm or 50 x 70 mm depending on the document
- Indian visa: 2 x 2 inches (same as US)
The US Passport Photo app includes presets for multiple document types, including international visas. Select the document type and the app applies the correct dimensions and requirements automatically.
Can I Use the Same Photo for Both?
If you're applying for both a passport and a visa, you can use the same photo session — just make sure you export two versions:
- One at full resolution for the passport
- One compressed to under 240 KB for the visa application
The US Passport Photo app lets you export for different document types from the same photo.
Bottom Line
For US documents, passport and visa photos are functionally the same. The only thing to watch is the digital file size limit for visa applications. Use the US Passport Photo app to export the correct format for whichever document you need.
